    Precision in digital printing: Lea Strässle & the honey jars

    Discover the possibilities of digital printing through the eyes of our creative packaging developer.

    From talent to professional

    It's 2020 and Lea Strässle is completing her training as a packaging technologist at Model. In the same year, it won the Young Talent Award at the renowned Swiss Packaging Awards. Only a few years later, Lea is already working as a coordinator in our development department. Because at Model, we promote young talent.

    In this position, she continues to support exciting projects with her creativity – including our gift packaging for Narimpex honey jars.

    The project & the challenge

    First-class Swiss quality connects: Model and Narimpex have been working together successfully for many years. It was immediately clear to us – the exquisite honey from Narimpex is a great promotional gift that reflects the essence of Swiss craftsmanship.

     

    But the gift is not only a sign of appreciation for our customers. It is also intended to show what is possible with Model, especially with our new LED digital printing machine. This is exactly where the challenge for our packaging technologists and designers lies.

    Gift packaging for the natural product honey – what could be better than a flower made of sustainable corrugated cardboard? We implemented this idea in the form of a honeycomb-shaped cardboard box that becomes a flower through a smart folding mechanism.

     

    Now it was Lea's turn to create the design for the lid: "I sketched the design in pencil directly onto the existing packaging. It was important to me to keep the design rather simple in order to underline the aspect of sustainability, which plays a major role today."

     

    "Since it's honey and the packaging is honeycomb-shaped, it was clear to me that I wanted to steer the design in this direction."

    Digital printing vs. flexographic printing

    Stylised honeycombs, a detailed bee and bright colours – Lea knows that her design can only be realised thanks to digital printing:

    "Since the lines in the design are very fine, flexographic printing would be less suitable here. Digital printing, on the other hand, is perfect for such detailed print images."

     

    For flexographic printing, a so-called cliché must be created – a kind of stamp. On the one hand, this allows for fewer fine lines and, on the other hand, it is only worthwhile to create them from a larger print run. Digital printing scores here with greater cost-effectiveness and flexibility.

    Digital printing: When individuality counts

    Lea's story shows that digital printing has unique potential. Small quantities, versatile colors and detailed designs are no problem. In addition, production can start without long lead times. This provides maximum flexibility for individual projects.

    In addition, there are exciting possibilities for personalization and interactive elements. For example, imagine a QR code on the gift wrapping that takes the recipient to a specially tailored landing page. In this way, you position your brand and strengthen customer loyalty at the same time.
